Ek Sher Tha Ek Sherni

Song 'Ek Sher Tha Ek Sherni' from movie 'Raju Chacha'.
ek samay ki baat suno yeh baat hai baDi puraani
Listen to the story of a time, a time long ago

main ne tumhaare raaju chaachaa se suni thi yeh kahaani
I heard this story from your uncle Raju

ek sher tha ek sherni
There was a lion and a lioness

unke tin the buchche
They had three children

tum jaise vo shaitaan the lekin
Those imps were like you, but

lekin kya paapaa
But what, papa?

lekin lagte the sabko achchhe
But everyone loved them

chhoti si ek gufa ke andar
Inside a little cave

chhota saa ek ghar tha
was their little home

unke jivan mein koi n dukh
Their lives knew no sadness

na koi dar tha
nor any fear

maan ke laadle the vo
They were their mother's darlings

baap ko jaan se bhi pyaare
And to their father, more dear than life

hansate-gaate mauj udaate
In waves of laughter and song

rahate mil kar the saare
they all lived together

kya hua paapaa
Then what happened, papa?

hooni ne jaal bichhaaya
Fate spread a trap

vahaan ek shikaari aaya
A hunter came there

voh sherni saamne aayi
The lioness faced him

usne banduuk chalaayi
He fired his gun

voh sherni ghaayal ho gayi
The lioness was wounded

chillaai tadapi so gayi
She screamed, she writhed, she went to sleep

usne phir aankh na kholi
She never opened her eyes again

sine mein lagi thi goli
The bullet had struck her in the chest

lekin voh marte-marte
But as she died

yeh kah gayi chalte-chalte
she spoke her parting words:

mere saathi mere sajana
My companion, my beloved,

in bachchon ko pyaar se rakhna
Care for these children with love

tum baap ho bhuul na jaana
Don't forget you're a father

maan ka bhi farz nibhaana
Now you must do the duty of a mother as well

bap bhalaa kya jaane
What did the father know of

buchchon ke sang kaise hansati roti hai
how to laugh and cry with children?

usne bhi yuun hansna-rona sikh liya
He learned how to laugh and cry thus

bachchon ke sang jagna-sona sikh liya
He learned how to wake and sleep with the children

samay ruka phir dhire-dhire chalne laga
Time stopped, then slowly began to move again

man ka ghaav dhire-dhire bharne laga
The heart's wound slowly began to heal

baap ki angali thaam ke bachche chalne lage
Grabbing onto the father's legs, the kids began to walk

maan ke badale baap ki god mein palne lage
They were nurtured in their father's lap instead of their mother's.

saal mahine mausam aane-jaane lage
Years, months, seasons came and went

sher ke bachche phir se hansne gaane lage
Once more the lion's children began to laugh and sing

baaki kahaani kal so jaao abhi
The rest of the story tomorrow; go to sleep now

nahin nahin paapaa abhi sun'aao
No, no, papa, tell it now!

achchha baabaa lo
Okay, okay

o raahul o rohit o raani
Rahul, Rohit, Rani

suno aage ab yeh kahaani
Listen to the rest of the story

paDaa unpe phir gam ka saaya
The shadow of sorrow fell on them again

vahaan ek babbar sher aaya
A black lion came there

vo gurarya chinghaada aise
He growled and he roared as though

ke kha jaayega sabko jaise
he were about to gobble everything up

vo bachche to bas dar ke bhaage
Those kids got afraid and ran

magar aa gaya baap aage
but their father came to face him

shuru ho gaya ek dangal
A fight broke out

lagaa kampne saara jangal
The whole jungle began to tremble

darakhton pe ka baithe bandar
The monkeys sat in the treetops

chhupe saamp bhi bil ke andar
The snakes hid inside their pits

kahin ud gaye sab kabuutar
All the pigeons flew off somewhere

chaDhe bhaalu parvat ke uupar
The bear fled to the hilltop

lage bhaagne dar ke haathi
From fear, the elephants began to flee

na tha sher ka koi saathi
There wasn't a single friend for the lion

hui khuub jam ke ladaayi
It was a monstrous battle

babbar ne bahut maar khaayi
The black lion took a beating

to bachchon ne taali bajaayi
Then all the kids applauded
