Nadeem-Shravan
Nadeem-Shravan are an Indian music composer duo, who were among the most prolific Bollywood composers in the 1990s. The duo consisted of Nadeem Saifi and Shravan Rathod. They are remembered for their successful scores for many movies including Aashiqui, Saajan, Phool Aur Kaante, Raja Hindustani and Pardes.
Music career
The association of Nadeem and Shravan dates back to 1972 when they met each other at a function. Their first Hindi film assignment was Maine Jeena Seekh Liya in 1981. But they were stuck with the B-grade films until they got three big films in the form of Ilaka, Hisaab Khoon Ka and Lashkar. Though the films were big, the music wasn't anything to be talked about.
Rise to fame
Aashiqui (1990) brought Nadeem-Shravan into limelight. Music Moghul Gulshan Kumar gave them the break and the film saw the emergence of 3 superstars - Nadeem, Shravan and Kumar Sanu. Can anyone forget 'Sanson ki zaroorat', 'nazar ke saamane jigar ke paas', 'dheere dheere se meri zindagi me aana', 'ab tere bin je lenge hum' and "Jaanejigar Jaaneman". Aashiqui ranks in the lot of the few films that have had a hit in each song. The Lions had tasted blood. Their success was overdue and they were not going to slip it away now. The joy ride continued with 'Saajan', 'Dil hai ke maanta nahin', 'Sadak', 'Dilwale' and 'Phool Aur Kaante'. Whether it was 'Chehra kya dekhte ho'(Salaami), 'Adayen bhi hain'(dil hai ke manta nahin) 'sochenge tumhe pyar'(deewana), 'aaj raat chandni hai'(Kal ki awaaz), they all had the distinct stamp of Nadeem Shravan. What made them different from the other composers is their beats.
After Gulshan Kumar murder case
In 1997, the duo ran into negative publicity when Nadeem, while on vacation in London, England, was named as the man behind the murder of his former mentor, record executive Gulshan Kumar (the boss of T-Series Music Company). In India, by the investigating police and arrest warrants were issued against him. He was said to have paid an underworld Don for carrying out this task. His passport was revoked, and to avoid arrest, he stayed back in England.
After being inactive for sometime, Nadeem-Shravan made a come back of sorts with new comer films like Yeh Dil Aashiqanaa, Raaz etc, but failed to reach their former heights. They have again proved their talent by hit albums like Raaz, Ek Rishta, Kassor, Yeh Dil Ashiqana, Andaaz etc.
Nadeem remained in the UK and, despite the immense geographical distance between England and India, he and Shravan continued to make music together. But they later split after Dosti: Friends Forever.
Their insistence on sticking to only one lyricist (Sameer) and male singer (Kumar Sanu) made them less versatile, thus churning out one brand of music, time and again, which has been quite successful.
Split and coming back together
In 2005, the duo split, apparently due to Shravan's disinterest in continuing with his music, and instead focusing on his son's acting career. Another reason cited is probably the distance between the two.
Style of music
Nadeem-Shravan have composed all kinds of music, be it fast-track, sentimental or dance numbers. But their forte was always melody. Another remarkable thing about their music was it was easy on the ears and did not take time to impress the listeners. It has been said that they don't have much variety; that they did not experiment too much. But this is where their strength lay i.e. delivering the music that is traditionally Indian, yet having a hint of modernity woven around it. But Nadeem Shravan wanted to prove to the whole world that they could be "conventionally different", if they chose to be. For this they needed the support of a director whose script required all kinds of music and who could give them a free hand in composing. When Subhash Ghai's 'Pardes' was released, a noted music critic said: "Nadeem Shravan should stop composing music... because there can't be anything better then this...Nadeem Shravan have reached their peak.".. The film had everything.. melodious love songs(do dil mil rahe hain), pop(My first day in America), pain(Ye dil Deewana), Qawwali(Nahin hona tha) and the best of all (I Love my india). Said Nadeem:
"I love my India was not a mere song but it continues to convey my feelings for the country"..
Nadeem Shravan made a typical type of songs, easily identified as theirs, with an unmistakable rhythm, such as in Saajan, in the song Too Shayar hai, or Deewana.
They have got the maximum hits with Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod and now, Sonu Nigam. They have worked with lyricists like Anand Bakshi, Faaiz Anwar, Hasrat Jaipuri, Rani Malik, and many others, but their tuning seems to fit best with Sameer.
They have proved their versatility by composing music for films like Subash Ghai’s Pardes and Priyadarshan’s Hungama.
Singers
They have got the maximum hits with Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, & Udit Narayan .
Their singer list includes Abhijeet, Babul Supriyo, Asha Bosle, Lata Mangeshkar, S.P. Balasubrahmaniyam,Vinod Rathod, Sadhna Sargam, Alisha Chinoy, Sudesh Bosle, Nithin Mukesh, Sarika Kapoor, Bali Brahmbat, Shreya Ghosal & Roopkumar Rathod.
Kumar Sanu became a hit along with Nadeem Shravan and each complimented each other although Kumar Sanu was successful with other music director as well such as Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, etc.
Nadeem tried his hand at singing, by releasing an album in 1995, called Sayesha. Tips cassetets released this audio.
Legendary Pakistan singers like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Ghulam Ali also sung for Nadeem Shravan
In the late 90s, they began using singers such as K. S. Chitra, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, and at times, but they still kept their mainstream singers for the most part.
Plagiarism
Nadeen Shravan have been known to take "inspirations" from old and contemporary Pakistani hit scores and compositions,a charge they have never denied. Some examples of their plagiarisms incude the "Come September" tune they copied for their film Raja, or Nasrat Fateh Ali Khan's song in Raja Hindustani, or "Gawah hai chand tare gawaha" hai from Damini, copied from an African song. Or the song Ya Mustafa ya mustafa in Aatish, lifted from an Egyptian track.
Their tunes and orchestration was a source of inspiration for many other composers. For example their song "Sochenge Tumhe Pyar.." is an "inspiration" for a song in Tamil movie Aaha. This song is sung by legendary singers Hariharan and Chithra.
Recently released song "Salaam.." from the movie Umrao Jaan (2006) bears an uncanny similarity to Nadeem Shravan's song, "Dhoom machi hai…", from the 2002 film, Ansh.
Awards
Nadeem-Shravan have won the Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the following films: Ashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991) Deewana (1992) & Raja Hindustani (1996). They won Screen Award for movie Pardes and Zee Cine Award for Raaz.
