EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI
Remarkable actor Aamir Khan has made an impressive opening of his directorial career with Taare Zameen Par. Think about it, the actor who has developed a reputation of offering hits and variety in each of his films, could have chosen a sure-shot masala script to add another block buster hit in his list of films. Rather, Aamir has chosen to film a subject which has been neglected by the superficial level of audience, the parents.
The film is quite realistic, atleast most of the times. The child actor Darsheel Safary captures your imagination at the very first sight. The pain and ignorance suffered by him and many more kids is quite aptly depicted in the storyline.
On the whole, the storyline dissolves the mind of young children who are bounded by the pressures of life.
Eight-year old Ishaan Awasthi’s life is not moving in the right direction, atleast for him. He is bogged down with the constant pressures of performing well in the class. For Ishaan, life is more than just a marksheet. He likes kites, fishes, shiny objects, spaceships and ice golas.
After receiving a complaint about Ishaan, his father Nandkishore Awasthi (Vipin Sharma) decides to pack Ishaan off to a boarding school. Maya (Tisca Chopra), Ishaan’s mother adores her son but agrees to send her son away from her.
For Ishaan, things get worsen as he has to bear the separation of his family.
In the boarding school, things improves until an art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh enters the scene and imbibes the culture of work with fun in the kids. Except Ishaan, the entire class responds to his ideas, making Nikumbh wonder about the kid’s psychology.
After exploring Ishaan’s problem, Nikumbh decides to bring back the sunshine in Ishaan’s life.
The first half of the film is excitingly gripping. Focussing on the character of Ishaan, scenes like fishing in the gutter, being misunderstood and much more. Likewise, the second half makes you feel restless at many moments due to lack of pace in the screenplay. Things become knowingly predictable, leaving the climax a mere formality. All in all, one can still through this flick without too many complaints.
The inclusion of songs add to the emotional atmosphere created by the film but after one can’t but wish that the song should have been shorter in length. It looks too much of a jerk or say, push brake on the bigscreen.
The script is well executed by the debutant director Aamir Khan, though he follows the theoretical methodology of direction – simple and straight. Musically, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy do a good job but its the niche lyrics penned by Prasoon Joshi that make the difference.
Actingwise, Darsheel Safary is surely the showstealer with his stelling performance. Superb. Aamir Khan is excellent, as most of the times. He is a real asset to the Indian film industry. Vipin Sharma comes across as a mindblowing actor. Tisca Chopra is very good and surely one of the underrated actors present in Bollywood.
Overall, it is a film that one should not miss out on. Watch it for some fun, some knowledge and moreover, to bring some twinkling delight in your child’s heart.
