EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, apart from his unique style of film making is also making a mark by avoiding happy endings for his flicks.
The film has no story to tell, and behaves as hopeless platform for the emerging talents like Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor.Probably the only person who will be happy after Saawariya will be Ram Gopal Varma, who will get some stiff competition from the underperformed Sanjay Leela Bhansali. For me, its not Om Shanti Om Vs Saawariya anymore, rather it is Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag Vs Saawariya.
Saawariya lacks content. The plot is deprived of a storyline which stands out as a sore thumb in the visualistic image of the film. The film represents a musical drama than a motion picture. Dark backlight, monotned thematic colour of green and blue, long curtains, traditional wardrobes, and ten songs fill up the frames of Saawariya.
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has lost out on making a Bollywood adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s “White Nights”, which stood out for its Russian feel and rawness. The story begins with a husky narration from Gulab (Rani Mukherjee), a sex worker toiling her way around a red light area. Gulab gets instantly obsessed with Raj (Ranbir Kapoor), a newcomer in that area. Gulab finds an instant liking for Raj but keeps it only till friendship.
Raj finds a place in everyone’s heart in that street, except for a place to stay. Gulab comes to his rescue and finds him a place in Lollipop’s (Zohra Sehgal) house, an old lady who misses her son.
Raj sings in RK Bar (what a homage to his grand father Raj Kapoor!). His heart fells for Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) who is awaiting the return of Imaan (Salman Khan). Raj, in all the best possible ways tries to woo Sakina, a shy girl who seems reclusive of herself.
For all Salman’s friends, it is a disappointing news that he is present for just 10 minutes in the film. Moreover, his character is left to the imagination of the viewers who strain their minds to explore his identity.
It is unacceptable to find the unreasonable bond between Imaan and Sakina, which is not explained throughout the movie. The film thoroughly leaves the viewers with an unassuming twist through its sad and tame climax.
The film has nothing new to narrate and this is the sole reason for its boring and ‘creative’ storyline. One wishes to see some bright sunshine, if not fireworks from Sanjay Leela Bhansali but Saawariya is immersed in the dark blue and green lights which turn out to be a sore in the eyes after a certain time.
Musically, the title track is the only hummable track from the film, while the remaining ones will be forgotten once you are out of the theatre.
Technically, Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography matches the true vision of Hollywood. The art direction is creative and well crafted but gets redundant after the initial portions of the film.
Love is replaced by anguish and unfulfilled desires in Saawariya’s script which leaves the viewer’s disappointed with the loosely tied climax.
Actingwise, Ranbir Kapoor stands out in all the frames of the film. He is the future star of Bollywood. Actress Sonam Kapoor does well in the role of a shy girl. Though assessing her talent would be difficult as she emotes silently with a few dialogues to her credit.
Salman Khan is kept only for some star value in the film. He has nothing to do in the screenplay and his omission wouldn’t have affected the story in any which way. Rani Mukherjee does well in her brief role. Zohra Sehgal is top class, as ever.
Saawariya will find it hard to survive the high tides of box office amidst the presence of Om Shanti Om. The feverish pace and boring story just adds more reasons to avoid the movie. Watch it only if you want to witness Ranbir Kapoor rock as a disappointing Saawariya!
On the whole, if you are looking forward to celebrate a colourful, bright and happy Diwali then Saawariya should be avoided.
