Debutante Director Kaushik Roy has conceptualized and penned the story of Apna Asmaan. The film fails to connect with the pain derived from the alienated sufferers in the plot. The emotional connections looses the grip with the story and chooses an alternative path to narrate the tale.
The film starts like a documentary, bringing the reality of a serious issue. Likewise, in quest of feeding unbelieveable twists, the story becomes dimensionless.
The movie is set in the city of Mumbai and presents a modern insight on the young couple’s desires and aspirations. The head of the family (Irrfan Khan) earns his living by working in the plastics arena. His wife (Shobhana) is a classical dancer but she gives up her hobby after marriage.
Their only son (Dhruv) is characterized by impaired communication, excessive rigidity, and emotional detachment. His only connection with the world is through his paintings.
One day a drug works magically on the boy but with its own set of ill consequences. The ‘brain booster’ sequence follows up with the boy turning out to be a mathemagician. He starts developing negative instincts and goes overboard in whatever he does.
The climax sinks all the positive highpoints of the film as the reasoning shown is hard to believe and fails to attach with our conscience.
The film loses its soul as soon as the director Kaushik Roy decides to follow a spicy route to narrate the story. The characters are believable but their mannerisms follow mindless drifts which takes the narration to a weirdy end.
Technically speaking, the film fails at the scripting stage. Kaushik Roy needs to follow a serious thought process before penning his imaginations as a story and presenting it as a motion picture.
Musically, Leslie Lewis is ordinary and adds no value to the narration. Barun Mukherjee’s cinematography is raw and soothes as a perfect backdrop.
Actingwise, Irrfan Khan is brilliant in pieces. On the whole, the actor becomes a poor victim of the whacky storyline. Shobhana is good. Anupam Kher leaves much to be desired. Dhruv needs to calm his acting nerves.
Overall, Apna Asmaan tries to talk about a serious topic but defrays from the content in the second half.
