EXCLUSIVE REVIEW BY HANUMANT BHANSALI
Shot exclusively in London and the surrounding locales of United Kingdom and France, Yash Raj Films release Jhoom Barabar Jhoom has a big starcast to its credits. The film has released amidst much expectations and with a director like Shaad Ali, who has earlier given superhits in Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli, a entertaining film is expected but Alas! Lets find out why..
JBJ stars Abhishek Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Preity Zinta and Lara Dutta in the lead roles whereas Amitabh Bachchan adds a celebrity value in the credits list.
The plot begins at an active station in London. Rikki Thukral (Abhishek Bachchan) and Alvira Khan (Preity Zinta) are waiting for their respective fiancés who are coming in the train from Birmingham. The train is delayed.
Rikki Thukral is a Bhatinda born, living in London; whereas Alvira Khan is a Pakistani, who carries a lot of attitude and a god gifted persona with her. Rikki and Alvira are unknown to each other but they manage to bump into each other at the café. They share the same table as the café is crowded and this makes a perfect setting for both the strangers to kill the time. They now start narrating their love stories to each other.
Rikki begins the proceedings by talking about his first meeting with Anaida Raza(Lara Dutta) at The Ritz, Paris. The night saw Princess Diana and Dodi walking out of the hotel, as Rikki exclaims, “When two lovers die, another two are a born.” This is the start of their love story.
Alvira Khan had discovered her love at the Madame Tussaud’s museum. Steve Singh (Bobby Deol) manages to save her from the falling wax statue of Superman whose prime target was Alvira. Cupid struck them at the first sight. Steve Singh happens to be a lawyer by profession.
The delayed train proves to be too costly for the changing emotions of Rikki and Alvira as they get alarmingly attracted to each other.
Critically speaking, the film loses out on content and moves on the performances of Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta, who are nothing less than the saving grace of the film. The complete screenplay is a hodgepodge of interesting moments.
The look of the film is trendy and glossy but this does not cover up for the pot holes in the story. Especially the climax leaves you wanting for more. The thirst of a complete entertainer is not quenched by JBJ.
Shaad Ali’s madness comes onscreen as we see a number of interesting moments in this 2 hr 15 mins films but the screenplay is let loose by Habib Faisal. Slowly, it gets absorbed that the film carries no story to tell and is only a light hearted amalgamation of stunning visuals.
Musically Jhoom Barabar Jhoom misses that zing that was clearly visible in Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli. The title track rendered by Shankar Mahadevan is going to rock the chartbusters. It is destined to be well-liked and accepted in the very first hearing. Ticket to Hollywood boasts of a western musical setup with Bombay Vikings singer Neeraj Shridhar and Alisha Chinai singing together. The track boasts of a interesting video to complement with. Other songs can be given a miss.
Visually, the film is rich and glossy. Cinematography is phenomenal. Fashion designer Aki Narula’s costumes are exceptional. Vaibhavi Merhant’s choreography is pretty innovative.
Abhishek and Preity capture the entire limelight with their okay performances, inspite of a bad script. Bobby Deol and Lara Dutta are shifted in the shadows. Lara Dutta is the best out of the four though her role is cut out to miniscule. Amitabh is a sheer waste in the one song that he does in installments throughout the film.
Overall, watch the film if you are big fans of Aby Baby and Zingful Preity because looking out for a captivating tale will certainly disappoint you.
