Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ finally sees the light of the day. As an opening film of the 30th annual Toronto International Film, it has been back in news after it was stopped from being shot in India years back.

The film story consists of some sequences that took place in India before it got independence - which deals with child widows. This was the time when child marriage in certain sections of society was a bitter reality. Such a role is played by Chuihya (Sarala), a seven-year-old widow who is sent to live in an ashram for widows. She encounters the head of the widows, Madhumati (Manorma), who exploits the residents. Shakuntala (Seema Biswas) is the only force that occasionally opposes Madhumati’s tyranny. Kalyani (Lisa Ray) is the beautiful young widow who is friendly to Chuhiya. Ironically, she is sent to work by crossing the Ganges. Narayan (John Abraham) is a follower of Gandhi. He falls in love with Kalyani irrespective of her status as a widow. And decides to marry her to wipe-out their inferiority.
