Welcome to a new age philosophy that could be perfectly geared to address India’s overwhelming problems. Well, it’s something akin to Munnabhai’s erstwhile Jaadu ki Jhappi formula for resolving crisis, but this time it’s more familiar and goes by the name of ‘Gandhigiri’. In case of confusion, simply take it as the obverse of ‘Dadagiri’ and you’ll understand the age-old Gandhisms of ahimsa and satyagraha in a whole new light. One which explains why you must turn the other cheek after the first one has been whacked by your opponent but remains conveniently silent on what you must do when both have been whacked. Then, like Munnabhai, you could go ‘thwack’ too!
Cast: Sunjay Dutt, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani
Direction: Rajkumar Hirani
So what you have here is an endearing mix of maara-maari and morality going hand-in-hand as our desi Santa Claus suffers a ‘chemical locha’ in his brain and begins to see Bapu all over Mumbai city. It all begins when the high-spirited radio jockey (Vidya Balan) decides to celebrate October 2 on the radio with a quiz on Mahatma Gandhi and our tapori hero chooses to participate in it. Bole toh, kyon? Because if he wins, he’ll get a chance to meet his dream girl who has been sending him into a swoon with her melodious voice on radio. And helping him to meet ‘bhabiji’ is old buddy Circuit who takes upon himself the arduous task of discovering why October 2 is something more than a dry day.
So Munna bhai becomes Professor Murali and metamorphoses his dadagiri into Gandhigiri. As the Art of Living guru of akkha Mumbai, he begins to peddle his pills of truth and non-violence as the final antidote to all personal and social unrest. Gambled away your dad’s hard-earned moolah? Go confess. Getting married on the basis of a lie? Go, tell the truth. Stealing other people’s homes for a livelihood? Watch out for the janata’s satyagraha. All this, while Gandhiji silently witnesses the social revolution and pitches in as the new age counsellor who proudly declares: Three bullets could kill me, but not my philosophy!
Does the sequel work? It does, but more as a moral fable or an Aesop’s tale that both endears and uplifts. The unbridled humour of Munnabhai MBBS has been replaced by a Raj Kapoor-esque innocence and goodness. The trio of Sanjay, Arshad and Boman (this time, he’s a scheming sardarji) re-work their magic. Of course, we wish the adorable Circuit had some more screen time and hadn’t been underplayed in the sequel. But then, part two boasts winsome Vidya Balan who has a wow screen presence and might soon emerge as the new star on the marquee. Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra gives the great Indian family one more let’s-go-goodwill-hunting entertainer, even as director Raju Hirani proves that sequels needn’t have the been there-done that feel…
